What I’m Writing

Something about the run of asphalt beneath our tires, the hum of a children’s movie playing for the kids, and the open scene of wide desert plains stirs up my imagination. We’re outside the mundane, the everyday that keeps us from really seeing the world around us. On the road you see all kinds of interesting people and things. And let’s be honest, getting out of the Las Vegas heat can do wonders for the creative mind. On the way home from our lovely weekend away I was jotting down my next story ideas. These new thoughts always fill me with excitement, the same kind of excitement I get when I pick up a promising novel. For me writing isn’t about knowing the plot from beginning to end. It’s about having an idea and letting the characters tell their story. I’m...

Unwanted Visitor

My kids were cleaning up the requisite belch of clothing and toys that come from traveling when I heard the yelp from my oldest. “Scorpion!” It’s a dreaded word in our house, one that has a strict protocol attached. 1.  Never try and kill it yourself. Always call for a grown-up. 2.  If the baby is nearby run and take him with you kicking and screaming if need be. We live across from what used to be desert and is now a bunch of overpriced homes squished together England Industrial Age style, so close there’s really no need for windows since you just see into your neighbor’s house. Even with the build in, we have some pretty nasty desert bugs that find their way into our house. I’d never seen a live scorpion until I moved into our home. Now I’ve seen and killed...

In Memory

Both my grandpas served in the Navy. My father-in-law, some of my uncles, my brother. All these and many more have given their time, hearts and minds for our protection. To all those who have served and for all those who now sacrifice time with their families, their peace of mind and their talents for our protection and the safety of others…THANK YOU. Today let us...

Putting My Pen on the Line…

The 81st Annual Writer’s Digest Short Story Competition deadline is just around the corner. Honestly I thought I’d missed it due to family obligations and too much going on in our busy home to sit down and write an amazing piece. But I’ve got a few more days and some great ideas and I intend to win this one – yep, the $3,000, the one on one attention from four editors, and the trip to NYC for the Writer’s Digest Conference. Yeah, that’s the one I’m going for. So tell me – what do you do when the nerves kick in and you start to deconstruct? If I’m on my game I remember this:     And then I realize no matter what happens, I love writing and without it as an outlet for my creativity, my days would hold less spark and joy. Whenever I put my pen on the line the...

On My Radio

Today I played this song {Not A Drive By}  five times while I cleaned the house. The cheesy lyrics about Hefty two-ply sacks had me shaking my head one moment and singing right along the next. Ha ha! Bags are getting prominent playtime these days. First Katy Perry and now Train. Despite the silly words, the beat is catchy and I got a lot of cleaning done to that rhythm. So tell me, what moves you while you work or clean? What tunes are playing on your radio these days?
