{The Land of Look Behind} Book Review

There is such excitement in the air when an author make their debut, especially when their book is diverse, adventurous, and intriguing. Aaron Blaylock launched his new book, The Land of Look Behind  yesterday. I’m happy to be a stop on the blog tour to spread the word about his novel set in historic and modern Jamaica. Ah, Jamaica, that little island we often think about in vacation daydreams. If you know anything about the origins of the island, you know there is a stunning variety of peoples who make up the modern day Jamaican population. In The Land of Look Behind, we encounter the Spanish, escaped African slaves turned warriors, English soldiers and more. In a cool note of serendipity, I met Aaron through Mr. Houston. Both of them served missions to...

Summer Break

The other day I got a message from Facebook, one of those forlorn notes dropped in my inbox that said something like, “We haven’t heard from you lately…” It dripped with quiet wondering… Does she even like me anymore? Is it something I said? Are we…breaking up??? The next day a dear writing friend messaged me, “Haven’t seen you around lately…” It was so sweet I wanted to hug her through my phone for checking in on me because, let’s be honest, I’ve totally pushed away the business of writing for the entire month of August…maybe a little bit of July and reveled in the delightful chaos of having four children at home for the summer. See you only get summer for so long. There’s swimming, splash parks, chores, cleaning (ha ha! They LOVED this one!) and visiting to be...

{Till We Meet Again}

This post is a personal one – and I hope you don’t mind. As a writer my beginnings are rooted in journaling, telling the story of life. Today we say goodbye to my Grandma… This is her holding my first baby girl. She loves babies and I know even though she won’t be with us here on earth she will be watching over all her babies from above. There is something precious about your final moments with a loved one. They’re sticky – the kind of memories that don’t fade away into the grey like so many others, but come to the forefront during quiet moments. I remember well those moments with my Grandpa Smith. His final days in the ICU were grave, but there was a moment when I got to be with him, combing his hair and talking with...
